Woody plants such as roses or fruit trees in particular, but vegetables such as cucumbers and tomatoes as well can be grafted excellently. Grafting is a very old method of combining desired qualities of different plants of a generic group in one plant and multiplying them artificially vegetatively. A distinction is made between two different grafting methods: bud and splice grafting.
Bud or Splice grafting knife: What‘s the difference?
Bud and splice grafting knives are extremely sharp knives. Therefore, they are not only used in gardening and landscaping. They are also widely used in crafts. However, their main purpose is to graft trees and other woods. Depending on the grafting technology, different knives are used:
- Bud grafting (winter or spring grafting):
With this method, the stock (lower part of the plant with stem and roots) and the slip to be grafted on are flattened and connected by plugs. Here, a clean cut is essential. For this reason, bud grafting knives are single-edged.
- Splice grafting (summer grafting):
With this technique, the gardener cuts vertically into the bark and opens it with the so-called bark remover or bark lifter, a pointer attached to the knife. He then places a premium bud of the second plant in the open place. Therefore, a typical feature of the splice grafting knife is the attached blunt pointer for lifting the bark. The blade of this type of knife is single-edged.
