Simple, efficient and indestructible. The original Mercator knife has been a favourite for over 100 years. Although not originally designed as a military knife, it quickly became an integral part of Kaiser Wilhelm's army, earning it the nickname ‘Kaiser Wilhelm Knife’. Nowadays it is appreciated worldwide for its slim and robust design and its versatility in everyday situations. This version is equipped with an additional stainless steel clip for quick access on a belt, pocket or rucksack.

Perfektes Vollmetall Alltagsmesser für Puristen
Ich habe mir das Messer in der nicht-rostfreien "Carbon" Variante zugelegt. Es ist ein sehr schönes Messer für Puristen, die ein Messer ohne überflüssigen Schnick-Schnack suchen. Relativ spitze und dicke und somit stabile Klinge, die hörbar und ohne Spiel in dem aus einem um die Klinge herum gefalzten Griffblech einrastet. Dabei fällt die extrem flache Bauweise ins Auge, da es außer dem um die Klinge herum gefalzten Griffblech keinerlei weitere Griffauflagen gibt. In der Rückseite vom Metallgriff ist "MERCATOR-GERMANY" eingeprägt. Ein zusätzlicher Hinweis "Carbon" auf der Klinge (wie bei Opinel) wäre sicherlich nicht falsch. In der "Carbon" Variante extrem schärfbar, dafür muß dies öfters durchgeführt werden. Der Griff bietet sich zudem für Lasergravuren Widmungen geradezu an. Summa summarum ein Messer für Puristen, die ein extrem flaches und stabiles Messer suchen, bspw. im Outdoor - Travel Bereich. Wobei traveller noch einen Blick auf den "Mercator Multi" werfen sollten. Das ist noch einen Tick kompakter und hat einen Korkenzieher sowie Dosenöffner an Bord. Ich denke die über 100-jährige Produktions Geschichte trägt es zu Recht.

Ein zeitloser Klassiker
Das Mercator Messer ist meiner Meinung nach ein Muss für jeden Messer Liebhaber es ist immer einwandfrei verarbeitet schneidet gut und lässt sich leicht schärfen noch dazu ist es noch ein schönes Handwerk und dies sieht man auch in kleinen Verschiedenheiten zwischen den Modellen die einfach bei Handarbeit ein muss sind auch ist der Preis im Anblick auf Herstellung in Deutschland mehr als fair. Auch fällt es in der Tasche durch die schlanke Bauweise kaum auf und ich finde wir sollten der Firma Otter dankbar sein das sie uns einem Klassiker aus dem Jahre 1867 immer noch erhalten. Danke

MERCATOR multi
A "legend" has returned. The 4-part Mercator pocket knife was produced more than 60 years ago by the Kaufmann und Söhne Company in Solingen. We have brought the knife back to life based on faded yellowing drawings. It is built to include 4 tools, just like in the olden days. A lockable knife blade, the awl for loosening knots and punching holes into leather and fabrics, the can opener, and a corkscrew. It takes more than 120 work processes for its manufacturing. Everything is crafted by hand. The awl and the can opener are forged on belt drop hammers, rough-ground and then finally fine-ground. The core in the corkscrew helix prevents the "crumbling" of the cork. The blade is made of carbon steel which holds its edge well, is sharpened and then receives another dry-fine grind. The handle, made of blued steel, doesn't have the non-rust properties of modern coatings, but it gives the knife a high-quality appearance. All these are properties that can hardly ever be found in the knives of today. The blade steel is C75 carbon steel. The American GI's brought this Mercator knife to America after World War II. There it became famous under the name "Black Cat Knife" and is still cult there today. The designation K55K means "K" for Kaufmann (the original manufacturer), "55" for Hochstrasse 55 (the original company address) and "K" for the symbol cat. The embossing is stamped under the press and after powder coating it is painted by hand as in the past. Their unique consistency makes it possible for us to grind the blades with precision and in a material-friendly way. The lighter layer is used for grinding, the slate layer on the bottom is simply to make the sharpening stone stronger. The Belgian whetstones must be wet before honing. Set the blade onto the stone at a sharp angle and pull it back in circular motions. A natural abrasive paste develops in this process, which sharpens the blade and polishes it finely at the same time. The Belgian whetstone no. 4 is the smaller one of our whetstones.
