Anchor Knife—a Pocket Knife (not only) for Sailors and Seamen

Anchor knife: bestselling pocket knife from Solingen

The anchor knife—also known as the OTTER anchor knife—together with the Mercator knife is one of the most popular pocket knives in our online shop. Both pocket knives are real classics of our knife manufacture. As early as in the middle of the 19th century, the anchor knife was produced by OTTER-Messer in Solingen by hand and distributed worldwide from Germany. Even today, the knife with the unmistakable brass anchor in the handle is very popular—not only for sailors and other water sports enthusiasts.

From seafaring knife to lifestyle product

Anchor knives were pure working knives in the middle of the 20th century and were particularly valued in seafaring and fishing. Even the navy of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) relied on the seafaring knife from Solingen. At that time, the handy pocket knife was hardly missing in any sailor‘s or fisherman‘s duffel bag! As the straight blade of the anchor knife is ideal for cutting through cords, cables and ropes of all kinds and for descaling fish.
Today, the knife with the anchor inlay in the handle is no longer just used as a sailor‘s or water sportsman‘s knife. As an everyday knife, the anchor knife is a reliable companion to go and is increasingly becoming a real lifestyle product.

The design: functional, simple and beautiful

Functionality and simple beauty—these are the attributes that characterize the anchor knife from OTTER-Messer. Anchor knives are real eye-catchers. And not just because of the riveted brass anchor embedded in the handle, which gives the pocket knife its special charm. A leather strap on the handle or the scantling (wooden handle) protects the knife against loss and looks cool on top of that. And with noble handle scales (e.g. made from Argentinian cattle bone or precious timber), some models are highly sought after by collectors and knife lovers, such as our model 173 with a bone handle and the blued carbon steel blade.

The blade: sharp, but safe

The foldable blade of the anchor knife is a hoof blade in the shape of a sheep‘s hoof. This makes it particularly suitable for pulling cuts such as those required for cutting ropes and other cords. The cutting edge is very sharp, but the back of the blade is rounded, which significantly reduces the risk of injury.
