HIPPEKNIEP large

The fact that the large Hippeknieps (goat knives) were once used as working knives in agriculture can still be guessed from their sturdy and simple construction. The pocket knives combine tradition and craftsmanship. Precise workmanship, coupled with European woods such as ice beech, root walnut or plum, give the knife its charm. A sturdier solution had to be developped: the rivet holding the blade firmly in position now comes equipped with a large semi-circular rivet in a broad casing. When needed, the rivet can simply be hammered in deeper if the blade begins to loosen after extensive use. This pocket knife is our large Hippekniep with handle shells made of smoked oak. The American GI's brought this Mercator knife to America after World War II. There it became famous under the name "Black Cat Knife" and is still cult there today. The designation K55K means "K" for Kaufmann (the original manufacturer), "55" for Hochstrasse 55 (the original company address) and "K" for the symbol cat. MERCATOR multi

A "legend" has returned. The 4-part Mercator pocket knife was produced more than 60 years ago by the Kaufmann und Söhne Company in Solingen. We have brought the knife back to life based on faded yellowing drawings. It is built to include 4 tools, just like in the olden days. A lockable knife blade, the awl for loosening knots and punching holes into leather and fabrics, the can opener, and a corkscrew. It takes more than 120 work processes for its manufacturing. Everything is crafted by hand. The awl and the can opener are forged on belt drop hammers, rough-ground and then finally fine-ground. The core in the corkscrew helix prevents the "crumbling" of the cork. The blade is made of carbon steel which holds its edge well, is sharpened and then receives another dry-fine grind. The handle, made of blued steel, doesn't have the non-rust properties of modern coatings, but it gives the knife a high-quality appearance. All these are properties that can hardly ever be found in the knives of today. The blade steel is C75 carbon steel. Our pocket knives are high-quality and durable, timeless and as popular today as they were in 1840, when OTTER-Messer was founded in Solingen in a small cottage - a traditional, water-powered sharpening shop. Pocket knives should be robust and easy to handle and must be able to withstand a wide range of tasks and requirements. Pocket knife, folding knife or folding knife? What is the difference?

Whether Swiss army knives, outdoor knives, Mercator knives, folding hunting knives or multi-tools: Pocket knives are handy and practical because - as the name suggests - they fit perfectly in any pocket. As the blade of a pocket knife can be folded into the handle, the names folding knife and folding knife are also commonly used for pocket knives. Pocket knives, folding knives and folding knives therefore refer to one and the same type of knife. They are characterised by the folding mechanism that allows the blade to be folded in and out.

The folding mechanism ensures that a pocket knife, folding knife or folding knife can be safely transported and even carried close to the body, for example in a trouser pocket. This means you always have a versatile and quickly deployable tool to hand for DIY and handicrafts, gardening, camping, hunting, climbing, hiking, sailing and other outdoor activities.
